Also known as ‘Triveni Sangam’, Allahabad is a metropolitan city in Uttar Pradesh, India. Also known as  ‘Prayag’, a place to offer prayers. It is, as the name suggests, a walled garden complex that serves as the burial ground of two Mughal descendants and one Mughal queen. The Khusro Bagh is the final resting place of Khusrau Mirza, his sister Nithar Begum and his mother Man Bai or Shah Begum. Khusrau Mirza was the eldest son of Jehangir. It is a splendor of Mughal architecture. The three tombs are distinct with the different architectural appeal.

They stand as proofs of the dark and twisted history of the Mughals. Akbar preferred Khusrau as the heir to the throne. Hence Jehangir blinded him out of jealousy. His brother Shah Jahan later murdered him. The discord between Jehangir and Khusrau led to the suicide of Shah Begum.
During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, it served as an important center for the rebels.

The Allahabad Fort, or the Ilahabad Qila, was built by Emperor Akbar in 1583, on the banks of the Yamuna. It is near the much-revered confluence. Akbar had originally named it ‘Illahabas’ or blessed by God, which is also the origin of the name Allahabad. Fort was the largest fort built by Akbar. It is a fine example of Mughal architectural design and craftsmanship. It has three galleries, flanked by high towers. In 1765, following the Treaty of Allahabad, the fort was garrisoned by the British East India Company troops under Robert Clive.

The fort houses the famous Akshaya Vat, the legendary banyan tree where people committed suicide to attain salvation. The Patalpuri Temple is also located inside the fort. It is believed that there are gates leading to hell from this temple.

  • It is open from 11 AM to 5:30 PM

  • The show on popular astronomy is available every one hour from 11.30 AM to 4.30 PM

  • The total duration of a visit, including browsing other displays, is well within 1 hour.

Primarily built in the 1930s by Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawaharlal Nehru, Anand Bhavan served for many years as the residence of the Nehru Family.  First of all, in 1970, it was donated to the Government of India by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Finally, it serves as a museum focusing chiefly on the personal belongings and artifacts of the Nehru family.

Famous for:

  • The various artifacts related to the Indian Independence movements

Visiting hours:

  • It is open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM
  • It stays closed on Mondays

Duration of visit:

  • 2 to 3 hours if one visits the Planetarium at the same time.
